The Man in the Cube: Why Didn’t We Save Ourselves When We Had The Chance!

Ain Al Mreyseh – 16 October, 2009: Today The League of Independent Activists – IndyACT set up a transparent cube on the corniche in Ain Al mreyseh where an average man will be living for 3 days while experiencing various climate change impacts. The event is part of the lead up to the “350” Global Day of Action against climate change (Oct.24) and is coordinated by IndyACT to urge world leaders to take fast and effective action on climate change in Copenhagen this December.

The long journey of "the last man" began today at 8.00 am in the cube where he will have to endure a fierce struggle against climate change effects including extreme temperatures, lack of food and rise of sea levels threatening to immerse the very cube he's living in. The man in the Cube represents the possibility of a dim future for mankind where we failed to act against climate change when we had the chance. To prevent the story of the last man from becoming a reality, we still have little time left to act and save the planet from a cataclysmic destiny.

At the end of this year, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen in order to come up with a new climate change agreement. This summit is considered one of our last chances to save life on earth from the impacts of climate change. “Unfortunately, the negotiation process is moving slower than the melting of the ice caps,” said Wael Hmaidan, Executive Director of IndyACT. “If countries do not resolve key political issues soon, then any Copenhagen agreement would be the planet’s suicide note”.

IndyACT insisted on the importance of the Arab states participation in the Copenhagen process, especially that climate change will devastate Lebanese and Arab economies. The League slammed the Arab governments for the indifference and lack of interest shown by them so far, and condemns especially the negative role played by Saudi Arabia to tackle the negotiations.

IndyACT calls all the Arab governments to meet the aspirations of their citizens and have a more positive and constructive approach in fighting climate change, and reminds them that they’re still responsible for one of the most vulnerable regions in the world toward the disastrous climate change effects.
