We can do 350!

Vote against climate change on election day. Vote against the worst problem facing the planet. Vote 350.

What is 350?

350ppm--as in parts per million, is the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. It is the number our world leaders need to agree on to save the planet from climate change. We are at 389ppm and running upwards.
The science is clear. We know the threat. It is a fight for survival. We know what needs to be done, and experts say we can do it. We need to shift our coal and oil economy to renewable energy technologies, like solar and wind. What is only missing is political will, and to achieve this will, it requires that each one of us recognizes the threat of climate change and requests action. This political will needs to materialize in the Copenhagen agreement in December.

In order to understand the importance of the Copenhagen treaty, you have to understand this: In order to avoid the catastrophic impacts of climate change we need to stabilize CO2 emissions by 2015. Six years to achieve this is a very short time. Therefore, the Copenhagen agreement is considered our last chance to save the planet. That is why most countries and major organizations around the world are focusing on climate change this year. Every region in the World is developing positions, discussing options, and engaging the negotiation process to insure the survival of its people. Every region in the World… Except the Arab World.

As you all realize, most of our region do not even know that the most important treaty in the history of the United Nations is currently being discussed. In the current parliamentary elections, not even one delegate put climate change as a priority or even mentioned it. We even doubt that one of them realizes that currently there is such a negotiation process. For example, yesterday a new round of negotiations started in Bonn, Germany, and will continue till June 12. Eight negotiators from IndyACT are there to lobby Arab countries to take strong positions. The feedback is very disappointing. Most Arab countries are not even concerned about the results of the negotiations, as if we are living on another planet. This is not acceptable, and the new future government must put climate change as one of its priorities.

In 2009, IndyACT is focusing all its campaign on the number 350. This number is the most important number in the World, and everyone should remember it. This is the number that our leaders need to take with them to the climate negotiations next December.

It is the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere that scientists say we need to reach in order to stabilize our climate. Now we are at 387ppm, and we need to go down to 350ppm.

IndyACT is working to make every man, woman and child in the Arab world will remember this number, and that our leaders adopt it as their goal.

If 350ppm is not adopted as a global goal within the new agreement in December, it will be too late to save the planet.

So far, Lebanon has not adopted 350 as a goal. Help us make sure that Lebanon and the new government participate strongly in the current climate negotiations, and push for a 350 goal.

Don't worry... we are not alone. There is a global 350 movement that is pushing each country to adopt 350. We need to do our part.
Vote 350.
