Lebanese Civil Society Demands Government to Properly Enforce Tobacco Control Law During Ministerial Meeting
Beirut, 18 December, 2012 – Activists held a huge banner today infornt of the ministry of health demanding the proper implementation of the Tobacco Control law 174 while a meeting was taking place among the Minister of Interior Marwan Sharbel, Tourism Minister Fadi Abboud and Public Health Minister Ali Hassan Khalil. The interior security forces forbid the activists from holding the banner on that location and stopped the reporters from taking pictures. One activists was even held in custody for a while and then released shortly.
The banner stated “Be up to it! Enforce Tobacco Control Law” to show the Lebanese people and civil society’s demands to prohibit recent violations of the law 174 that had been taking place in a number of closed public places according to sources. Sources say that the government has overlooked a number of violations ever since the law was initiated in closed touristic public places on September 3rd 2012.
“The Lebanese people and civil society is fed up with the habit of not respecting laws in general and the tobacco control law in particular which a number of NGO’s had worked very hard for. This law which was passed by the Lebanese parliament to respect each citizen’s right to live in healthy smoke-free environment must be respected!” said the Media Campaigner at IndyACT, Ali Fakhry.
In a nutshell, IndyACT demanded that the ministers who were meeting today at the Ministry of Health to take serious action towards implementing the law in all closed public places. What we fear is the fact that all these violations made against tobacco control law will affect directly the implementation of other laws and thus leading to a unanimous underestimation of all governmental laws. A proper enforcement of law 174 can only be of great benefit to all Lebanese citizens.
