TFI and IndyACT towards Full Implementation of Law 174 for Tobacco Control
In our continuous efforts to enforce law number 174 to ban smoking in closed public spaces, Tobacco Free Initiative – TFI and IndyACT with the support of the research department in the American University of Beirut - AUB invited organizations and activists from the civil society to take part of the first meeting to establish the Tobacco Control Citizen Watch – TCCW on Tuesday, June 19th in AUB. The aim of the Watch is to discover and develop the best means to implement the law through civil action.
The meeting which hosted a number of active Lebanese NGOs began with a brief explanation about law n# 174 and its different sections. TFI VP Ms Rania Baroud explained how September 3rd will be the highly-anticipated date when the law will be officially implemented in all public places including touristic locations (restaurants, hotels, night clubs, cafes etc). (Governmental bodies, public transportation, work places, schools, universities, hospitals
Baroud added that the meeting would be a brainstorming session for the TCCW in order to develop an effective working strategy that would keep everyone involved in enforcing the ban.
Afterwards program coordinator Hala Alaouie presented a draft of the TCCW suggested strategy of work. According to Alaouie, TCCW will work according to certain framework for monitoring, reporting and documenting. The suggested strategy would recruit activists to monitor the implementation of law n# 174 at several levels.
At the end of the meeting, the groups decided to start the initiative by dividing the target areas geographically. That is, each NGO would work on enforcing the law in the area where they are present using a number of tools for reporting to the specialized authorities. Among the tools that would be also used are special online applications and social media.
To further discuss the TCCW work strategy the group decided to hold another open meeting on June 28th . For all NGOs and activists interested in attending the meeting and taking part of the TCCW kindly send your details to
